01 / WHAT’S AT STAKE
Once they’re gone,
they’re gone.
Shade on the way home. Birds over the lake. A little room to breathe. Mature trees are part of the city’s everyday life—and replacing them takes decades.
01A lake and its birds are next door.
The corridor borders the Hebbal lake ecosystem. The campaign cites 183 bird species recorded on eBird, including the spot-billed pelican. Removing mature trees means losing habitat as well as shade.
02The tree count keeps growing.
540 → 893 → 1,128
From the earlier assessment to the latest notice, the count has more than doubled. Citizens deserve an explanation of what changed.
03Citizens need the complete picture.
The notice refers to a tree-by-tree list in “Annexure-1”. The campaign calls for that list, environmental and hydrological assessments, and the transplantation and compensatory planting plans to be made public before a decision.
04The project is already being challenged.
The campaign raises the project’s challenge in the Karnataka High Court and asks for felling to be halted while the matter is before the court. Cutting a mature tree is irreversible.
05More road needs more answers.
The campaign cites an IISc analysis by Prof. Ashish Verma raising flooding concerns and questioning the tunnel’s traffic benefit. A public consultation should address those questions before trees are removed.
